Jeanette Brandt Morris Obituary

JEANETTE BRANDT MORRIS, 89, of Grand Marais, died June 18, 2002 at the North Shore Hospital.  She was born March 10, 1913 in Lindstrom, Minnesota to Victor and Mayme (Swanson) Brandt.  In 1935 she made her first trip to the North Shore and Gunflint Trail, visiting her aunt and uncle, Carl and Alis Brandt, who were in the process of building their resort, Balsam Grove Lodge, now Nor'wester Lodge on Poplar Lake.  Jeanette enjoyed the area and stayed to work at her relatives' resort.
She married Emerson Morris in January 1942 and in the late forties and fifties they established a flying service on Poplar Lake to transport fishermaen and canoeists into what is now the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.  During Emerson Morris' term as Sheriff of Cook County, Jeanette served as a part time deputy and did radiio dispatching for the office.
After retiring in the early seventies, Jeanette onece more returned to helping out at Nor'wester Lodge and pursued her hobby of making braided rugs as well as numerous other handicrafts.  Whether doing crafts, cooking, or being out berry picking, Jeanette lived a full life, enjoying the wilderness and people of the area.
Jeanette is preceded in death by her husback R. Emerson Morris, and her parents Victor and Mayme Brandt.
She is survived by her brother Harris Brandt of Chisago City; two sons Robert E. Morris of Maryville, California and Keith Morris of Grand Marais, Minnesota.
Visitation and funeral services were held on June 21, at the Cavallin Funeral Home in Grand Marais, and burial at Maple Hill Cemetery.
